Energy from biomass
- biomass is produced by burning plant material and animal waste
- charcoal is produce by burning wood to remove moisture
- with the water removed it is a good source of fuel
- energy can be produced by burning it and using the steam to power a turbine
- it can also be stored to produced methane and that can be used
- ethanol is mixed with gasoline to produced gasohol
- biodiesel is made by removing oil from plants and algae
- algae can be produced in tanks with little disturbance
it's all about turbine
- the main things in a power plant is the turbine and the generator
- the spinning of the turbine make the electricity
- you can sp9n that turbine with water, wind, or steam
- you can make steam by burning coal, biomass, natural gas, and oil
- the sun can heat up water to make steam and move the turbine
geothermal power
- geothermal energy is using water to make energy
- heating homes depends on the temperature
- water is pumped down pipes and as it gets deep it boils making steam and then it goes back up
- the steam then turns the turbine
- it has a low greenhouse gas emission
- home heating and cooling can be done everywhere
- to start this it is very expensive
hydroelectric power
- making electricity with moving water
- it is very efficient and is good for flood control
- reservoirs can be used for recreation
- it destroys habitat
- high construction cost
- disrupts fish migration
- high CO2 production
nuclear power
- uranium is mined to make nuclear fission
- it is heated up to make steam and turn a turbine
- emit very little carbon dioxide
- has a low environmental impact
- has a low energy yield
- building these plants cost alot
- has extremely radioactive waste
- people don't like these plants because people don't feel safe around them
- the waste takes a long time to get rid of
- waster is stored on sight, in the factories
solar power
- photovoltaic cells are made of silicon
- they are attached to a battery and provides energy to the house
- when sunlight hits the PV cells it creates electrons
- has no emissions and are portable
- not that expensive
- not alot of maintenance you just have to clean it now and then
- high start-up cost
- passive solar uses energy from the sun to heat water
- passive solar heating can be stopped in the summer by just closing the vents
- has no emissions and is cheap
- high initial cost
- only works when sun is shining
wind power
- wind turns a windmill making electricity
- low cost after initial investment
- no emissions
- little land disruption
- initial cost is high
- requires maintenance
- lots of noise
- kills birds
