Bozeman Science: Ecosystems Guided Viewing
1: What is primary productivity? What do we measure it in? (units)
Primary Productivity is the synthesis of organic compounds from atmospheric carbon dioxide
2: What are producers? Who are the main producers in the ocean? How is this measured in an
aquatic environment?
Producers are organisms that take sunlight and make their own food The main producer in the ocean is algae
3: What is a trophic level? List and define the trophic levels. (Give examples)
In which direction does the arrow go in a food web? Explain.
A trophic level is a eating level, The first level are the producers that make their own food, second level are the second level consumers they eat the producers, third level is the first level consumers they eat the second level consumers, The fourth level consumers are the carnivours they eat everything
4: What is a food web? How is it different than food chains?
A food web is all the connections that each animal has , It is different from a food chain because a food chain only shows the trophic levels
5: Explain the limiting factors for growth in ecosystems. Explain logistic growth.
The limiting factor is when an ecosystem doesnt let something grow Logistic growth is when it reaches a limit
6: What is the carrying capacity (K) of an ecosystem?
The carrying capacity is a when it can support
7: What factors affect the carrying capacity of a population? Explain how wolves and elk
populations are linked and how they will reach equilibrium.
The factors that affect it is being too crowded too much competition and not enough water They are linked because if one is gone there wll be more of the other They will reach equilibrium when they are the same amount
8: Summarize the story of the Whitebark Pine and how humans can impact an entire ecosystem
by choices we make (directly or indirectly).
The temperatures are rising too fast and the animals cant adapt to it, Humans impact it because we change the ecosystem too fast.
